A 72-year-old woman from Takeley and her three-year-old great grandchild were killed when two cars collided on the M11 just south of Stansted Airport.
An Essex Police spokesman said the accident happened just before 5pm yesterday on the Cambridge-bound track of the motorway.
A red Ford Escort was involved in a collision with a blue Ford Orion, which left the carriageway and overturned, killing two of its four occupants.
The victims were today named by police as three-year-old Kelly Bloomfield, of Sycamore Close, Takeley, and Elaine Barker, 72, of North Road, Takeley.
The other two people in the car, the deceased woman's 13-year-old grandson Adam Bloomfield, also of Sycamore Close, and the 68-year-old male driver, Lloyd Majoran, 68, also of North Road, were both taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow suffering from serious injuries.
The driver of the Ford Escort was Alan Turner, 54, of Bow, east London.

A 17-year-old has been seriously hurt in a crash in Grays.
Police said the teenager was thrown from a Peugeot 205 which crashed on the A13 at Grays on Saturday, ending up on its roof. Three people were taken to hospital.
The accident happened at about 10.30pm on the London-bound track of the road, near the junction with the M25. Officers believe more than one car may have involved.
