Wet and windy weather played havoc with cyclists seeking fast times at the weekend, although the Polytechnic '25' at Oxford was won by Richard Prebble (Team Clean) in the fast time of 52 minutes 40 seconds.
Only 15 of 100 entrants finished and Chelmer's CC's Bill Broadfield rode through a hailstorm to take seventh place and was the 'best veteran' on age standard in 56m 37s.
Meanwhile, back in Essex, only 19 riders finished in the Essex and Suffolk Combine '25' and here another Chelmer rider, Dave Nock, was best veteran on the age standard.
The result was a fine victory for Rik Van Looy, of the promoting clubs, who was the only rider to beat the hour.
The result was (1st) R. Van Looy (Colchester) in 56.43; (2nd) Dick Wood (Colchester 1.1.37; (3rd) Dave Nock (Chelmer) 1.2.41; (4th) Paul Dewberry (Colchester) 1.6.34; (5th) Barry Copping, (Stowmarket) 1.8.59 and (6th) Dick Wall (Chelmer) 1.9.35.
