A former sergeant in the American air force who came to Halstead during the Second World War has died aged 79.
James Ashton came to England from Massachusetts in 1942 with the US Army Air Force.
He was posted to Norfolk where he met his wife and they later moved to a cottage in Chappel Street, Halstead.
Friend Arthur Kelson, of Windmill Road, said: "Jim was a loyal and dedicated member of the Halstead Royal British Legion.
"He was one of five members in 1972 who saved the branch from closing down and going out of existence."
Mr Kelson said Mr Ashton spent many years fundraising around the town.
He said: "Many remember him dressed in his uniform collecting for the poppy appeal in the High Street.
"He was also an honorary member of Halstead branch of the Dorset Regiment old comrades association. Jim was always ready to assist any former serviceman in need and will be sorely missed."
Mr Ashton leaves a widow, Joyce, and a brother in the US.
