A tragedy-hit family were today grieving for the second time in a year.

Just over 12 months after 20-year-old Paul Lane was killed in a horrific car smash, his family were today burying his son.

Three people died in the pile-up on the Benfleet stretch of the A130 on January 31, 1998. Paul Lane never got to see the son his girlfriend was carrying when he died.

The young son of Mr Lane, of Wickford Avenue, Basildon, was due to be buried today.

Paul Lane junior had suffered a "short illness" and is said to have died of natural causes aged nine months on March 5.

A police spokesman said: "We carried out an investigation and the child died tragically of natural causes. He was a much-loved and cared-for child."
