Saturday saw Witham record a tremendous win over one of the better teams in the league who have been holding a high position throughout the season.

Most of the action came after the break after a subdued first half in which the visitors scored a hotly disputed goal following a free kick that caused a scramble in the goalmouth.

It looked as though the ball had crossed the line into the side netting for an own goal.

This was disallowed by the referee who was in close attendance but, after consulting his assistant on the line, he changed his mind and awarded a goal.

Play was held up as Witham protested and home goalkeeper Tony Williams received a yellow card.

Whatever Witham manager George Young said during the break did the trick for Witham as they dominated the second half by scoring four goals and missing just as many chances.

They equalised after 56 minutes from the penalty spot when Mitchell Springett sent Leighton goalkeeper Gary Turner the wrong way.

Witham took the lead eight minutes later when Adam Morrish hooked the ball in from close range after a good cross by Dean Braybrook.

A third goal for Witham came in the 74th minute when a Springett free kick was deflected in off the wall.

Wayne Vaughan hit the post with a fierce shot, but soon afterwards he scored Witham's fourth goal from close range, a reward for him as he had harrassed the visitors defence throughout the second half.

Witham now have three successive away Ryman League matches, starting on Saturday at Harlow Town.

On Tuesday March 30 they visit Hertford Town and on Saturday April 3, Hemel Hempstead host Witham.
