A fund-raising campaign has been launched by St Mary's Church, Bocking, to boost its £300,000 restoration appeal.
Under the Millennium Challenge, people are being asked to buy shares in the church. In return, their donations will be recorded in a book.
By the start of the new millennium, it is hoped that 2,000 shares costing £10 each will have been sold, raising enough money to mend the church roof.
The appeal was launched last year and, so far, £10,000 has been raised, with another phase of work due to start soon.
Dean of Bocking the Very Rev Philip Need said that he was pleased with the appeal's progress. "I have been very encouraged," he said.
"There has been a lot of local support and we have had a number of special events." The appeal committee came up with the idea of a record book because it wanted to do something to tie in with the new millennium.
"Some churches sell bricks, but we thought this would be a lasting record which is good for posterity," said Mr Need. "It is the community's church and I always hope people feel they can be involved and be a part of it."
The church is also awaiting a decision on a bid to English Heritage for further funding.
As the target is reached, work will start on repairing other parts of the church roof, refurbishing stone and redecorating the inside of the building.
Anyone who would like to make a pledge to the appeal can pick up a form in the church or call the church office on 01376 553092
