Traffic police are appealing for witnesses after a 75-year-old man was killed in a road accident on the A127 at East Horndon.
An Essex Police spokesman said a red Ford Escort estate was involved in a collision with the pensioner at about 7.55pm last night.
The man had been trying to cross the London-bound carriageway of the road from the central reservation when the accident happened.
Traffic police had to close the road for three hours while an examination of the scene was carried out. A police surgeon certified the man dead at the scene.
The driver of the Escort, a man from Romford, was treated at Oldchurch Hospital, Romford, for shock and minor abrasions.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward. Anyone with information should contact traffic police at Brentwood on 01277 201478.
