When the Channels Ladies and Gentlemen took part in the Channels/Regiment Way Challenge two of the Channels players took the two "Nearest the Pin" prizes.

Simon Larner on the 13th and then the Lady Captain, Lis Gander, the 17th at NIL inches.

This was Lis's first 'Hole in One" which she celebrated in the time honoured tradition by generously treating the assembled company at the post match dinner to Liqueurs.

On Tuesday, March 9, the Ladies 'Mail on Sunday' team of Madeline Le Maistre, Sandra Bramley, Jenny Wheelhouse and Jenny Humpries travelled to Southend to meet the team from The Essex Golf Complex.

Unfortunately it proved to be the end of their run. Jenny Humpries managed a six and five win, Sandra Bramley a last hole win and then having halved the match Madeline Le Maistre had the task of going out again against her original opponent to get a result.

This went in favour of the home club at the second extra hole. March medals

The change in the weather helped produce some good scores when both the Ladies and Gentlemen of Regiment Way Golf Centre played in their March Monthly Medals this last weekend.

The Ladies have played the second round of the National Mail on Sunday competition at Crondon Park against a team from the home club.

Over the first nine holes the game was fairly balanced between the two teams but as the rounds continued Chelmsford Ladies slowly increased their margin of holes, finally taking the game on a 4-0 victory.

The Chelmsford team was captained by Ann Simpson and the team order was Amanda Colgate, Rita Caton, Dawn Jones and Alison Evans.

At the same time the Ladies Captain, Eileen Croker was visiting Theydon Bois for the second round of the Evening Standard's Captains Challenge Trophy where her opponent in 18 holes match play was Jenifer Sargent.

The match was very even throughout, the lead changing hands on several occasions. Finishing all square on the 18th, the first extra hole was brought into play and Chelmsford's Lady Captain, taking the hole, won the match and entry into the third round. Hardy golfers brave weather

Thirty hardy golfers (including a special mention for the Ladies Fourball), participated in the inaugural Essex Lupus Group Charity Golf Day, held at Burnham-on-Crouch Golf Club on March 3.

Extremely high winds and near-monsoon rain and hail storms at the later stages of play, did not prevent some excellent scoring in such inclement weather.

Charity Golf organiser, Gordon Harvey, confirmed that over £500 was raised by the event and expressed his sincere thanks to the competitors and sponsors without whose generous support these events would not be possible.

Competitors and sponsors are cordially invited to subscribe to the Millennium Lupus Charity Golf Day which will take place on Wednesday April 19, 2000. You can contact Gordon on 01621 852068 to make reservations.

The prizegiving after dinner, was made by Lupus U.K. National Director, Brian Hanner, preceded by a resum of Lupus activities and the effect that this incurable condition has on over 40,000 U.K. residents, of which 90 per cent are female, it is a most deserving cause.
