Chelmsford knew a win would virtually secure their promotion to London North East 2.
The game remained tight throughout and closely contested. Bury kicked off and the first 15 minutes were played at a frantic pace.
This led to several mistakes including the conceding of a try when a Bury player took advantage of an interception. This try was also converted to leave the visitors in the lead.
However, within a space of five minutes, Chelmsford had replied with a try of their own via number 8 Paul Smith. With the try being unconverted, Chelmsford finished the half two points down.
It was only five minutes into the second half that Chelmsford clinched the victory, this time with Paul Foster using his pace on the wing.
Chelmsford end their league campaign on March 27 away at Wymondham where they hope to secure the league title. Kick off 3pm.
Other results: Bury St Edmunds II 17, Chelmsford II 0; Chelmsford Ladies 5, Ipswich Ladies 15.
