This was an interesting game, with play swinging from end to end throughout the 90 minutes.

Basildon thought they had taken the lead when from a free kick Hewes hit a fierce shot onto the underside of the crossbar.

Just like in the 1966 World Cup final, the ball came off the crossbar then rebounded off the goalline or thereabout. The only difference between the two instances was that on this occasion the referee did not give a goal.

Dave Cockerill subsequently kicked the ball to safety and play continued. At the other end, keeper Butler conceded a free kick within the area when he picked up a back pass.

Dave Stittle hit a shot at goal, but Butler made amends just getting enough on the ball to deflect it over the crossbar.

Following this, the home side played some good possession football. One move between Steve Horton, John Taylor and Dave Stittle was finished off when John Taylor drove a strong shot inches over the angle of post and crossbar.

Michael Gore came on in the 44th minute, due to Paul Brewington having to retire with a knee injury.

Brentwood's new shape seemed to suit them, with the front men looking more forceful than in the earlier play. Mark Simpkins was the Blues' main source of supply. He put in several excellent crosses that on another day would have been converted into goals.

The visitors always looked threatening in possession and Brentwood nearly paid dearly when a lack of concentration allowed Baitram to break clear but Dave Pether made a brilliant diving save to retain his clean sheet.

Brentwood: D. Pether, D. Cockerill, M. Simpkins, L. Felstead, J. Read, C. Mead, J. Taylor, G. Delea, S. Horton (G. Webb 70th), D. Stittle, P. Brewington (M. Gore 44th).

On Saturday, Brentwood will entertain Concord Rangers, kick off 3pm.
