A campaign has been launched by a former Conservative councillor to scrap Leigh Town Council.
Brian Isaacs, of Belfairs Close, a former Tory councillor, has delivered around 2,000 letters to homes across the town about the campaign.
He claims so many people have replied, he hopes two candidates can be found to stand in the May town council elections - dedicated to dissolving Leigh Town Council.
He said: "I have been against Leigh Town Council since day one. I feel a referendum is needed now.
"The response I have had is unbelievable. I have had phone calls, e-mails and letters.
"I have a team of people willing to find independent candidates to stand for being against Leigh Town Council.
"Their aim will be to do everything they can to bring about the referendum and get rid of the town council."
Mike Dolby, chairman of Leigh Town Council said: "They'll have to go Parliament to get rid of the council because it's a statutory body."
