Police and fire chiefs have been investigating a suspected arson attack at a Basildon school.
The fierce blaze, at James Hornsby School in High Road, Laindon, began at around 4.30pm on Thursday and destroyed 60 per cent of the basement.
Two fire crews from Basildon battled to control the flames and used thermal imaging equipment.
It is believed the blaze began after papers were lit in the boiler room.
Police said they were hunting four youngsters seen entering the school at about 4.10pm.
Sgt John Mackman said: "Anyone who may have seen these four youths is asked to contact Laindon police on 01268 410101, quoting incident number 527."
The school only opened last September, following the merger of Nicholas and Laindon schools.
