Shoppers who have been caught up in queues can vent their anger on the manager of a town centre supermarket - all in the name of Comic Relief.

Mervyn Chilvers, manager of Sainsburys in Priory Walk, Colchester, will spend an hour caged up outside the store today along with four members of his management team.

To make the event even more worthwhile, they will all be dressed as clowns and staff, and customers will be given the opportunity to throw wet sponges at them.

Tickets have already gone on sale to staff for a donation of £1 for five sponges, and will also be available on the day between 12.30 and 1.30pm to anyone who wants to join in the fun.

Already the store has raised around £700 from a series of tombolas and a 20 mile bike ride and it is hoped the £1,000 mark will be reached with the proceeds from the sponge throwing.
