Thurrock's schools are looking at the problems being thrown up by the Year 2000 computer bug.
A special seminar organised by Thurrock Council was attended by 20 teachers, heads and governors, who were told about the pitfalls for computer and "embedded" systems - those with date and time sensitive controls which may not have an obvious Year 2000 problem, such as heating and alarm controls.
Councillor Carl Morris said: "It is good to see that our schools are taking this issue seriously and taking the steps they need to combat the problem. Schools are like any small business. They have many computers and other systems which may be affected.
"I want to send a clear and unequivocal warning to all small and medium sized firms in Thurrock - doing nothing is not an option and could seriously damage your business.
"The council will lend a helping hand where we can, with training and advice, but you just recognise that you need to take action and you need to start now."
Similar council-run seminars are being held for small and medium sized businesses.
