Increased routes at Stansted are creating extra jobs at the airport.

Managing director John Stent said 100 more staff will be taken on by BAA this year and Irish airline Ryanair will be adding another 200 to its payroll as more services are introduced.

He expected additional routes by Go to add around 150 to its staff list and coupled with increased employees at aircraft maintenance company FLS 1,000 extra jobs will be created this year. It is the biggest employer at Stansted with around 800 staff.

Meanwhile, extra charges look set to be imposed on persistently noisy airlines but Mr Stent said measures to ban pilots landing at night from flying below 3,000 feet until they are on their final approach should improve the situation.

Carriers already face fines of up to £1,000 for any aircraft which breach the new noise limits and this could be raised to £2,000 for persistent offenders.

Seven aircraft were fined in December, four in January and five in February at a time when flights increased by 50 per cent on the previous 12 month period.

The airport is now considering an additional surcharge for persistent offenders of £2,000.

Levies are to be introduced on Stansted's car parking charges to fund measures to promote public transport initiatives.

It is expected car parking charges on both long and short stay parking will rise by 50 pence. The present long stay charge is £5.50 per day.

Charges are also expected to escalate for the staff car park in a bid to encourage employees to use public transport.
