Colchester United manager Mick Wadsworth has been stunned by the news that Gillingham striker Carl Asaba has been let off a four match ban.

The former United loan player was sent off along with U's defender David Greene after the pair clashed during the 1-1 draw against the Kent side a fortnight ago.

Wadsworth said: "It's amazing - I can't believe it. We couldn't get any video evidence of the incident, so I don't know how the FA can come up with this decision."

Newspaper reports said Asaba got off his ban after he was backed up by fans, police and the club doctor that he was concussed at the time of the incident.

Managing director Stephen Gage said today: "We are looking into the incident at the moment and will be talking to the FA again today.

"We can't see how they can overrule the evidence of one of their own officials and there was no video evidence of the incident, which is why we hadn't lodged an appeal.

"The linesman had stated that he had a clear and unobstructed view of the incident from 12-yards.

"We're not going to question Gillingham's motives and we wish them well in their quest for promotion. But we shall be speaking with the FA to clear up the position with David."

Meanwhile, Wadsworth will be holding talks with loan signing Warren Aspinall this afternoon with a view to making the move a permanent one.

The much travelled Aspinall, will return to Brentford after tomorrow's match away to Wycombe Wanderers, as his month's loan period is up unless a deal can be reached.

Wadsworth said: "At the very least I will be hoping to extend his loan if we can't agree a deal for a permanent move but we still have a lot of talking to do."

The U's will face former Vauxhall Conference rivals Wycombe without club Captain Richard Wilkins, Karl Duguid and David Greene, if the FA uphold his three match suspension.

But David Gregory and Stephane Pounewatchy will both be available.

Wadsworth said: "It's a big game for us and it's certainly a big game for them because they are not in the greatest of positions.

"What has gone on before between the two clubs means nothing to me - all I know is that I will be looking for my players to get wired into them tomorrow."

U's striker Mark Sale, who had been linked with a move to Hartlepool or Macclesfield, has sparked an inquiry from Brighton.

But the Sussex third division outfit have not made a firm offer so far.
