The Blues beat East Ham 7-2 at Ferndale eight weeks ago and it seems they thought they only had to walk onto the pitch and Saturday's game would be won.
However, they were in for a surprise, as The Hammers had other ideas.
They went about their task in an industrious manner, being quicker to the ball which enabled them to dominate the first half.
Had their finishing been more accurate, they could have reached the interval with an unassailable lead but, as it happened, they only scored one goal and that was from a penalty.
Dave Cockerill conceded the spot kick for allegedly holding Mussie in the area and Ayaoge took the penalty, placing the ball just inside the post.
Brentwood improved in the second half and within five minutes of the restart they were back on terms.
An East Ham player handled the ball 25 yards from goal. Dave Stittle took the free kick and hit an accurate shot over the end of the wall into the top corner of the net.
From this point the home side did the bulk of the attacking with the visitors depending on counter attacking moves to relieve the pressure on their defence.
Although many half chances were created neither side could find a telling finish to secure the three points.
