Revellers saw in the new year in relatively quiet fashion throughout south Essex and across Britain.
Around 90,000 people flocked to the traditional London celebration point Trafalgar Square where police said it was a "fairly quiet night".
Eleven people were arrested, mainly for drunkeness, and 42 minor injuries were reported.
Elsewhere there were street parties in Birmingham, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Belfast city centres.
Police in Basildon reported a busy yet peaceful night with arrests down on last year.
Insp Gwynneth Williams said: "It was a fairly busy night with the usual sort of bits and bobs to deal with.
"The number of arrests was down on last year which is good news. It means the people of Basildon were having a good time without having to involve us."
