AFTER over a decade of campaigning for something to be done about heavy-duty lorries speeding outside their homes, residents on a South Ockendon street have finally made a breakthrough.

Thurrock Council has agreed to install a speed indicator device on West Road, near to Benyon Primary School, in an effort to put an end to cars and lorries speeding on a road that has long been an accident waiting to happen according to one resident.

Pat Williams, 68, of West Road, has been trying to get the council to introduce speed reduction measures to her road for over 10 years because she believed it inevitable that a pedestrian would be involved in a fatal collision if nothing was done.

She said: "It's been going on a long, long time but nothing has ever been done. All the other roads in the area have been considered for speed restrictions but West Road has been left out even though this is where most of the lorries have to come down.

"They come racing over the top of the railway bridge and into the village and there's no point anyone trying to cross because they wouldn't stand a chance."
