Concerns about the safety of a council halfway house after a five-year-old died in a fire has led to a call for a public inquiry.

John Tipple, spokesman for the Respect party, said something needs to be done before the episode is "swept under the carpet".

Courtney Bristow died in the fire on November 8.

It ripped through the wooden chalet at Silverwoods in Thorrington, where she was staying with her mother and two sisters. They were rescued.

Colchester Council has said it will continue to use the site for homeless people waiting to be re-housed.

But Mr Tipple has voiced his fears that nothing will be done about what he feels is a "housing crisis".

He was involved with Silverwoods 18 months ago after complaints were made by mother Shelley Kent.

She had complained about the "flea-ridden" and "filthy" rooms she was having to live in with her two-year-old asthmatic son.

She was placed at Silverwoods after being made homeless.

Environmental health officers investigated the complaints by Miss Kent but Tendring Council and Colchester Council carried on using the site.

However, in response to Mr Tipple's call for action the council said it would not be right to comment at this moment in time.

Fire investigators have said a candle was to blame for the fire.
