Business leaders are celebrating the end of major repair work on a Braintree town centre car park.
Scaffolding at the George Yard car park has come down and the top floor re-opened on Saturday, giving shoppers vital parking spaces in the run up to Christmas.
Simon Taylor, Braintree Council car park manager, was pleased the £400,000 work had finished on time but pointed out that although the top floor was open, parts still needed some finishing touches. All the work will be done by this Saturday.
The car park has 715 spaces, with 244 on the top deck, which were unavailable during the revamp.
Concerns were expressed that the top floor being closed off and a car valeting business on the ground floor could cause parking problems, but George Yard leaders are delighted the work has finished on target and the car parking spaces are now available.
George Yard centre manager Brenda Baker said: "There was a time when no-one would have noticed if the top deck was shut. But it just goes to show how popular Braintree has become as the car park is being used by so many people.
"We're so pleased the car park is back to its full capacity."
The Christmas tree lights in George Yard will be switched-on on Friday.
