SOUTHEND Council could be forced to pay out millions of pounds if it continues to fail to meet a Government target for the amount of waste it recycles.
Currently about 22 per cent of waste created by people living in the area is recycled, but the Government has said councils should be recycling 27 per cent of waste by April next year.
The council needs to start reducing the amount of waste it shovels into Barling landfill site or it will face fines of millions of pounds within a few years.
A campaign has been launched by the council to encourage people to put more of their rubbish in pink sacks provided for recyclable waste.
A new guide to recycling is being posted through the doors of homes in the town explaining exactly what type of rubbish can be placed in the pink sacks, which are collected from the kerbside alongside black bin liners of household waste.
