Two fire crews, from Colchester and Nayland, were sent out at 9.45pm yesterday to tackle the blaze. They were relieved by Clacton firefighters at 1am. The fire was at Priory Farm, owned by J.Copsey.
Sub-officer Nick Rate said the firefighters were just "fire-watching" as they let the hay - winter bedding for farm animals - burn itself out.
He said: "It was in the middle of nowhere and too well alight to deal with. There was no indication how it had started."
