Chelmsford shoppers are bucking predictions of a Christmas shopping freeze and spending freely in the run-up to the festive season
A national survey predicted the first drop in Christmas retail spending for nearly a decade. Latest figures show the Chelmsford Christmas spend started two weeks ago, the concern now being how long it will last.
According to Mick McDonagh, centre manager of High Chelmer shopping centre, the question is how long the festive spending that has already begun, will continue?
Mr McDonagh said: "Customers are spending strategically on-line and in shops. Figures show the big Christmas spend started two weeks ago and is in full flow but sustainability is now the question."
The annual study by accountants Deloitte says the amount spent on Christmas presents in the United Kingdom will fall by £400 million this year.
East Anglian consumers are predicted to be in thrifty mood, planning to spend £266 per head on gifts while the open-handed Welsh are thought to be prepared to lash out £359.
