The A133 through Colchester regularly snarls up, hitting motorists travelling into the town from Tendring, mid Essex and the north.

Essex County Council has admitted the road, an arterial route for north Essex, is at capacity. It has now published its planned solution - with carriageway widening and junction changes.

However, the improvement scheme is for the next 15 years and relies on winning funding from central Government.

Proposals include dualling part of the road, installing a bus lane to link in with a park-and-ride in Stanway, and replacing roundabouts with traffic light-controlled junctions.

Rodney Bass, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "These proposals aim to tackle the growing issue of congestion in Colchester and are key to keeping this town moving in the future."

The scheme will go out to public consultation. Details of how this will work are currently being finalised.
