Residents could soon bury their loved ones in a historic Brightlingsea churchyard after a long-running dispute drew to a close.
Brightlingsea's All Saints' Church has been at the centre of a bitter row with residents since 2003, when its graveyard was declared full.
Now the parochial church council (PCC) has agreed in principle to a compromise proposal made by Brightlingsea Town Council to provide neighbouring land for burials.
The planned extension would occupy a site south of the existing burial ground bordering Gravesend Wood to the south, Moverons Lane to the east, and farmland to the west.
Peter Patrick, Brightlingsea town councillor, said this extension would last for ten years and would have room for 80 new graves.
He said the situation would be reviewed after that, adding the reuse of existing graves was one of the many proposals that had been discussed, though it was "not favourable".
Members of the town council and PCC said a partnership group would be formed to finalise legal agreements and move the proposal forward.
