Army bomb disposal experts were called out to a garage at a property in Harts Lane, Ardleigh, after the owner found a Second World War artillery shell.
After a careful examination, the 18lb shell, which was 35cm long and 5ins in diameter, was found to be empty.
The incident occurred at 11.30am on Friday and the bomb disposal unit took the shell away with them.
