SOUTHEND schools are on the lookout for new people to become governors.
Working with Southend Council, schools are looking for Southend residents with an interest in children's education to step forward as governors.
Council spokesman Jane Ladner said: "Governors are a key part of school management, and could be called upon to make any range of decisions from appointing a new headteacher, right down to the colour of the school loos!"
Governors also agree budgets and help to raise classroom standards. Both primary and secondary schools are in need of extra people to join their governor teams.
Candidates do not need special qualifications, only a "commitment to their local community and imp-roving the life chances of young people."
New recruits will receive free training and advice from the council's governor support services.
Mrs Ladner said: "Schools are a very important part of our local community.
"Their scope will be expanding as they offer longer opening hours and extra services under the Every Child Matters government scheme.
"School governors play a vital role in this."
If you are interested in becoming a governor, contact Jane Ladner at the council's department of children and learning, on 01702 215922.
