TWO new gas storage tanks planned for a Canvey terminal will be 45 metres high - the equivalent of 13-storey buildings, it was revealed last night.
They would be higher than the island's current tallest building, the Monico pub and club.
A presentation by Calor Gas to councillors at a specially-convened planning meeting outlined proposals for two vast tanks capable of storing 108,000 tonnes of highly-volatile liquid natural gas (LNG) at the gas terminal in Thames Road.
The proposals left some councillors shocked at the size of the development and fearful for the safety of residents.
A public meeting will be held in the New Year when Calor will also put in a formal planning application to the council.
