The Colchester young persons' service of Mind, the mental health charity, which is run from a house in Maldon Road known as the Junction, is among just 11 projects singled out for praise in a national award scheme.

Workers, and some of the children who use the centre, were invited to Chelsea Football Club's Stamford Bridge ground to pick up the "highly-commended" prize from health minister Liam Byrne.

The National Institute for Mental Health in England's (NIMHE) positive practice award recognises staff efforts in supporting 16 and 17-year-olds with complex problems.

Opened four years ago, the Junction employs a mental health nurse and social worker to give expert advice to youngsters from across Colchester and Tendring.

Art and yoga sessions are made available for troubled children with drug and alcohol problems, and a young persons' advisory board gives teenagers a say in how services are developed.
