A crash has prompted more calls for safety barriers to be installed along a busy stretch of road.

Concerns had been voiced about the possibility of a car plunging from the A120 at Ramsey on to a new bridleway below.

Those fears were realised yesterday when a Toyota came off the road and fell 15ft down the embankment, landing upside down.

It happened between the Ramsey and Parkeston roundabouts.

The 40-year-old driver, of Harwich, had a lucky escape but the accident has sparked renewed pleas for barriers to be installed.

George Elmer, district and parish councillor for Ramsey and Parkeston, explained that people had been worried about a car crashing on to the bridleway beneath the road.

A member of the public raised the issue at a meeting a few months ago, which was held to discuss proposals into a new country park.

A spokesman for Essex County Council, which is in charge of bridleways, said it was the Highways Agency's responsibility to install crash barriers.

The Highways Agency said barriers were not normally required for roads with a drop. They are normally only provided to stop drivers hitting a static object like a lamp-post.
