Carol Leverett will teach her last day at Cressing Primary School on December 19, after more than ten years there.
She took up a post as deputy head there in 1995. She became head in 1999 after the sudden death of Russell Gorringe from leukaemia.
Mrs Leverett, 57, a mother-of two from Chelmsford, is looking forward to indulging her ambition to travel.
Sue Giles, deputy head at Bentfield Primary School in Stansted Mountfitchet, will be taking over as head in January. Mrs Leverett would love to see any old pupils after school on December 20.
