The accident happened at about 7pm yesterday in Rowhedge Road just as the road leaves the town.
A Ford Escort car was coming towards the town when it left the road, went through a hedge and crashed into a garage.
Essex Ambulance Service clinical operations manager John Nicholls said: "The car has caused extensive damage to the garage which was only finished relatively recently.
"The driver managed to get out of the car prior to our arrival. He has been incredibly lucky and suffered only minor injuries. He was taken to Colchester General Hospital for a check-up.
"The residents of the house were in at the time and were checked over, but apart from being rather shaken, were otherwise unhurt."
