Essex Police launch a Christmas drink-drive campaign today and are urging people to tip off officers about boozed-up motorists.
The month-long campaign includes advertising in cinemas in Essex from mid-December, plus flyers and posters in restaurants and clubs.
Police are warning drivers if they get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they could face a prison sentence, a driving ban and a fine of up to £5,000.
Chief Inspector Tom Diment, head of road policing, said: "Drinking and driving is a crime and one which often results in death and serious injury.
"We will be taking steps to make the roads safer by making sure that those who drink drive are arrested and face the consequences.
"In the past 12 months, 33,037 people were stopped and breathalysed, so it could very easily happen to you. Combining drinking and driving is not worth it."
