Excrement was thrown over a woman in a busy Colchester street during a distraction theft.
The disgusting act was carried out on the victim in St John's Walk at about 3.30pm yesterday.
She had just left a bank after making a withdrawal of thousands of pounds.
Det Sgt Gavin Watson, of the town's CID, said: "She had been in the bank withdrawing a four-figure sum, and placed it in her pocket.
"She then felt something on her head and shoulders and realised it was excrement.
"A couple then approached her and helped her in wiping it off and cleaning her up. Then when they have gone she realised the money had been taken from her pocket."
Anyone with information should call PC Brandon Savage at Colchester police on 01206 762212.
