The Government's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched an investigation into the cause of the chemical fire at Wardle Storeys in Factory Lane, Brantham.
The 55-year-old was working at the site when fire broke out causing a major emergency operation including Essex and Suffolk's fire and ambulance services on Tuesday.
The man had to be airlifted to Broomfield Hospital's specialist burns unit near Chelmsford, where he is being treated for serious burns to his face, hands and chest and superficial burns to his abdomen and arms.
He was today said to be in a critical but stable condition.
The Suffolk Fire Service has also launched investigation, the results of which are not likely to be known for up to four days.
