The blaze at the chalet in Hall Road, Heybridge, broke out just after midnight today.
Fire crews from Maldon, Witham and Tillingham attended the scene and put the fire out.
Numerous 999 calls were made and initially Essex County Fire and Rescue Service received reports there could be people trapped.
The fire in the 10m by 5m timber chalet was well advanced by the time the firefighters got there.
At 8.30am today, the chalet was still smouldering as fire investigator Andy Stapleton turned up to the scene. He said it was too early to say what caused the fire.
