Fire crews battled for more than an hour to free two men trapped after their car hit a tree and telephone pole in Abbot's Road, Colchester, and the road was still closed this morning.

Essex Police today called in the Independent Police Complaints Commission to investigate the circumstances.

As police arrived at an address in Clearwater, off Abbot's Road, at about 9.45pm last night, two men, aged 34 and 35, and a woman aged 19, left the scene in a Ford Fiesta.

Minutes later, the car left the road, went through a footpath and fence before striking the tree and pole.

The pole had to be sawn in half to free the driver and his front seat passenger.

All three were taken to Colchester General Hospital where both the driver and front seat passenger were treated for fractured pelvises.

PC Trevor Fleet said the road was due to reopen this morning and an investigation was under way.
