A school in Colchester is celebrating after plans for a £3.5 million science and technology block got the green light.

Phase two of Stanway School's redevelopment programme got the go-ahead yesterday - despite objections from some residents in nearby Villa Road.

The new two-storey building will be built around the existing Rutherford teaching block, which will eventually be demolished.

School chiefs said it was vital to get the green light while funding was available and rejected residents' calls to relocate the new building.

Agent Robin Matthews said: "There is no other position on the site for this building. If this isn't approved in this position, it probably won't happen.

"We are on a very, very tight timescale - funding is approved and we have to move very fast."

Councillors promised steps would be taken to screen the new block from neighbouring houses by planting trees.

The horseshoe-shaped building, which will house science and design technology departments, received unanimous backing from Colchester Council's planning committee last night.
