A bogus caller talked his way into an elderly man's home in Colchester, allowing an accomplice to steal "a large sum of money".
A smartly-dressed man called at the victim's house in Berechurch Hall Road at 5.45pm on Friday and said he needed to check the gas supply because there was a leak in the area.
While the man was talking to the resident in the kitchen, another man entered the house and took money from a number of rooms.
The first man was described as being in his mid-30s and wearing a blue suit and tie. Police have no description of the accomplice.
Detectives are appealing for anyone who may have seen the two men to contact them, particularly workmen who were in the area that afternoon.
