Investigations were today continuing into the deaths of two teenage girls on an Essex rail crossing.

Their grieving families paid tribute to Olivia Bazlinton, known as Liv, of Elsenham, who had just turned 14, and Charlotte Thompson, 13, known as Charlie, of Thaxted.

Prayers were said in nearby churches yesterday after the girls died on a level crossing at Elsenham station.

The teenagers, both pupils at Newport Free Grammar School, apparently ignored warning lights and closed barriers to run for a train to Cambridge which had stopped on the other side of the platform.

The girls had stepped a couple of feet on to the track when they were struck by the 7.24am Central service from Birmingham New Street to Stansted Airport, which was travelling at about 70mph in the other direction.

Their headteacher, Richard Priestley, said he was "deeply shocked" by the news. The school was due to hold a special assembly today and will offer counselling to pupils. Olivia's family said she would be "forever engraved in our hearts".

Cards and flowers have been left at the station in memory of the friends, who died in what British Transport Police are calling a "tragic accident".
