ON the day George Best was buried, Canvey produced arguably their finest performance since joining the Conference in conditions Island boss Jeff King insisted the Irish wizard would have revelled in.
Players stood in torrential rain which had fallen for hours up to the kick-off to lead a minute's clapping in memory of Best before the kick off at Exeter City.
And, after seeing off high-flying hosts Exeter to the tune of 2-0, the Gulls' manager scoffed at suggestions that conditions had been unplayable.
"We've all seen the sort of pitches he used to perform superbly on in the films of Besty in action over the past few weeks and they were much worse than that," said King.
"This is England in the winter and football's a winter sport. You have to expect to play on pitches like that."
