Witham's James Gibson remains on course to defend his breaststroke title at next year's Commonwealth Games.

The 25-year-old has put himself in firm contention for a place in the England swimming squad for next year's event in Australia, following the Welsh Swimming Winter Meet in Swansea last weekend.

The three-day meet was the final opportunity for English swimmers to be nominated for selection.

And it seems as though Gibson has done enough to cement his place in the squad.

He has now travelled to Italy for a European Short Course event, which begins tomorrow in Trieste.

Gibson admitted he was not at his best in Wales but is satisfied with the way his preparation is going, ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

He said: "It was a step in the right direction for me and now I'll be looking to take a big chunk off my time.

"It was good to get the qualifying distance for the Commonwealth Games.

"I need a bit more rest but I'm looking for a step up in quality when I go to Italy and this year it's a case of me building on my performances."
