A school has launched a review into its hairstyles policy after a mother criticised a decision to take her children out of classes for wearing braids.
Notley High School, Braintree, has sent out questionnaires to parents and published a questionnaire on its website after several parents raised concerns about what was defined as an extreme hairstyle.
The move comes after Sandra Scrase, of Stephenson Road, Braintree, voiced her anger that her two children, Rebekah, 13, and Tamara, 12, were taken out of class for having an "extreme hairstyles".
She argued that exceptions were made for children from ethnic minority backgrounds and was angry that her children were taken out of 11/2 hours of classes.
Assistant headteacher Dave Lee-Allan pointed out that since the school sought advice from equal opportunities bodies, the school had the same policy regarding braids for all pupils in the school.
Mrs Scrase, 38, argued the girls had ten french plaits in their hair, which were neat and tidy and not extreme.
Mr Lee-Allan said: "We are trying to give parents the chance to have their say on uniform."
