Police investigating a serious crash say a witness could hold the key to what happened.
A car smashed off Abbot's Road, Colchester, sparking an investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
The Ford Fiesta had just left the scene of a police inquiry in nearby Clearwater.
But now Stanway traffic police are urging a mystery driver, believed to have stopped at the scene, to come forward and shed some light on the crash.
Insp Steve Brewer said: "We believe that a lady in a dark- coloured Ford car arrived on the scene within moments of the crash happening.
"She stopped and got out of her car. We would very much like this lady to contact us as we believe she may have some important information."
The 19-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the car which crashed, has now been released from hospital.
But the two men in the car are still being treated in hospital for injuries, which are no longer thought to be life-threatening.
The car left the road at about 9.45pm last Thursday and went through a footpath and fence before striking a tree and a telephone pole.
