Cabbie Danny Cutter picks up his passengers in Britain's fastest taxi - a 148mph supercar.

The 26-year-old drives fares around Colchester in a bright blue, turbo-powered Subaru Impreza.

The £22,000 car, which was designed to compete in the world rally championship, has the capability to reach 60mph in less than six seconds - but not in town traffic.

Mr Cutter, who works for a cab firm in the town, admits the car is a bit extreme as a taxi but says it gets him noticed.

"I do up to 1,000 miles a week and I reckon it only does about 20 miles per gallon when I am crawling along in town in the rush hour," he said.

"It may be faster than most things on the road but it doesn't go any quicker than any other car in a traffic jam. But it's great fun to drive and good for business."

A spokesman for Colchester Council, which licenses the cabs, said it does not regulate what sort of vehicles can be used providing they pass annual safety checks.
