Under the Freedom of Information Act, would every county councillor please answer the following question, with a plain yes or no?

If it was your own money you were spending, and not the taxpayers’, would you hand out 442 credit cards to to 862 people (Gazette, April 9) and allow them to run up a bill of £1.7million?

An Essex County Council spokeswoman goes on to state the £1.7million only represents 0.08 per cent of its total spend in the past year, as if it is acceptable because 0.08 per cent, is a minor insignificant amount For the average taxpayer, £1.7million is highly significant and all taxpayers’ money should be accountable.

When they put themselves up for election as county councillors, did they inform the electorate just how relaxed they would be about our public funds? Or did they pledge to look after public funds, serve the public, and spend our taxes in the most efficient and wise manner?

Taxpayers should consider if this is the way we want our hard earned money spent.

Shouldn’t we be entitled to a better service and more accountability from Essex County Council?
