RECKLESS jetskiers have been causing chaos in two riverside communities.

Marine police are investigating complaints about jetskiers circling boats and speeding up and down the River Colne.

Three jetskiers were captured on camera by an off-duty police officer.

Police are also checking CCTV in the area to identify those responsible.

Peter Byham, of High Street, Rowhedge, was crossing the river by ferry with his daughter and three grandchildren. He said: “They were tearing up and down outside the Anchor pub at up to ten to 12 knots, trying to do tricks and going round boats in circles.

“It was really very dangerous.

“They were creating so much wash, people rowing in dinghies and canoes were at serious risk of being swept under by these buffoons.

“They are a menace and they should do it in places that don’t disturb other people.

“I’m not against people going fast, but it shouldn’t be at the peril of the rest of the population.”

Michael Mitchell, of High Street, Wivenhoe, a member of Wivenhoe Sailing Club, said it was not the first time jetskiers had caused a nuisance on the river.

He added: “They belt up the river without realising there is a speed limit, but it causes problems if there are people sailing and canoeing. The sailing club tries to control it as best it can.

“Members often ask them to slow down.

“We just want people to be aware of the speed limits and respect other river users.

“If everybody obeys the rules, it works fine.”

Donna Veasey, an Essex Police spokeswoman, said: “There is an issue with people being irresponsible on personal watercraft around the county and officers seek to educate users about appropriate and safe behaviour.

Essex Police has two personal water craft for use by marine unit officers to engage with users.

“Where officers see people behaving irresponsibly on personal watercraft, we will seek to prosecute them.”

Police prosecuted 30 people last year for flouting byelaws on the water.

They were fined between £800 and £1,200.
