POLICE say it is likely to be several days before they formally identify a couple killed on the A120 at the weekend.
The couple are believed to be a husband and wife from Clacton.
They died when their car hit a bridge and burst into flames just before the A133, near Great Bromley, at about 2.30am on Sunday.
Insp Steve Brewer, who is leading the investigation, said: “We believe it is a married couple and have spoken to relatives, but we have to go through more pro-cesses to confirm identification.
“We are keen to speak to anyone who saw the vehicle travelling on the A120 or who saw the collision. We have had some witnesses who came across it after the collision and we are trying to piece together everything that happened.”
Firefighters rushed to the scene to put out the flames, but were unable to help the man and woman, who were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The A120 was closed eastbound for several hours while officers investigated the crash. It was reopened by 9.30am.
