FAMILIES of soldiers serving in Afghanistan were treated to a special gala performance of Aladdin.

The Mercury Theatre, in Colchester, laid on an exclusive free performance of its pantomime for children and partners of those in 16 Air Assault Brigade, currently serving a six-month tour.

It was the idea of the borough mayor, Sonia Lewis.

She said: “I went to the Mercury Theatre and the Army because, as the mayor, I felt I wanted to do something other than say, ‘we are thinking of you’.

“It was absolutely brilliant. I want to express my sincere thanks to the Mercury Theatre, who covered the entire cost of this performance and to Waitrose, who supplied party bags for all the children to take home.

“It was such generosity and I was quite overwhelmed. By the end of the night I was fighting for words and it is without doubt one of the highlights of my time as mayor.

“There was such a feeling of comradeship coming through and everyone went home very happy.”

Colonel Tom Fleetwood, commander of Colchester Garrison, said: “Aladdin was a wonderful pantomime enjoyed by all of the families lucky enough to attend.

“Christmas is a difficult time for families when soldiers are serving overseas, particularly children.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to enjoy an evening of entertainment and take their minds off any worries they might have about their loved ones.

“I would like to thank the mayor for suggesting this event and the Mercury Theatre and local businesses, who worked together to help make it such a wonderful evening.”

Waitrose gave additional goodies to children who had recently celebrated birthdays.
